our story

It all began on the evening of Nov 29th 2003, at former Chat Noir French Restaurant in Costa Mesa, CA. Brad approached me [Jana] and we instantly connected; it was love at first sight. The next 4 years that followed were a whirlwind of romance, growing pains, and adventures. We circled the globe, traveling to South America, Europe, and Asia. Then one night, Brad surprised me with a romantic beachside proposal. We made it official on August 23rd 2008 with an intimate wedding at a hip art gallery in Laguna Beach. A year later we finished redesigning our home in the beach village of Corona del Mar.

On May 18th, 2010, we were blessed with a sweet little miracle of our own, our baby boy Taj Leon. He stole our hearts and took our breath away! Then, 19 months later, his incredible little brother, Jax Franz, arrived on Christmas morning (December 25th) 2011. What an amazing gift we received! In an effort to slow down the clock and enjoy our beautiful family, in Spring of 2012, we sold our CA seaside home and moved across the country to our dream lake house in Brad's hometown of Bemus Point, a resort village on Chautauqua Lake in Western New York! Even though we are living a more slow paced life, we are living a life far from ordinary!

From the West Coast to the East Coast, our Grover family adventures continue! So won't you come along and join us on this journey of love, family, and travel we like to call our La Vida Grover!

Our Scenic September

A recap of our September: Labor Day bowling, family time with cousins Chloe, Sierra, and Cayden, & Grandma Sue, Bachelorette party wknd for mama, two LA daytrips (to drop off and pick up dada from LAX), and the Disaster Preparedness Expo. Dada Brad traveled to Norway and UK for a very successful business trip, and this weekend he is in Arizona for a bachelor party. Taj had many "firsts" this month (bowling, saying "I Love You", peeing in the potty, and first haircut), and made his molar teething (2 on bottom, and 2 on top) look like a piece of cake!

We went on a lot of hikes and relished the nature we found. The difference between New York and California is that in NY the nature surrounds you in every direction. In California, you literally have to drive out to go look for it, unless you just want the beach. So while Brad was working or on his business trip overseas, Taj and I mapped out our adventures and explorers we became! We discovered some very serene secret spots in Orange County, ones that we will return to for more hiking and playing in. I love what my friend Nana wrote on her blog a while back, about seizing every moment with our little ones and getting out there and taking them to new places. It's so true! To think I grew up in Orange County and there is still so much to uncover! I love to take my "Curious George" on new adventures and field trips every week, its so much fun! Taj LOVES to walk, run, explore, and look for cool things (especially rocks!) so we are definitely doing a lot of that while I still have the energy during this pregnancy! He also LOVES to sweetly hold our hands while walking :) We have not only been active outdoors, but indoors as well! Our new hot spot is Open Play at Frogg's Bounce House (LOVE this place, lots of soft bouncy houses for Taj to jump in and slide on, I feel like a kid myself when I go!) We also started going to a Mommy & Me Tiny Tumblers gymnastics class every Monday morning (this week Taji learned how to do a somersault.... with mama's help!). Through our playground outings, walks, and gymnastic class we met new play buddies Nico, Nicholas, and Maddy, and had playdates with Princess Brooklyn and my sister's friend's little guy (who we are playing with for the first time this afternoon!) Here are the highlights of our September:
Strolling on the beach, hiking around Pirate's Cove in CDM:

Environmental Nature Center (Newport Beach): Various trees, plants, a creek with waterfalls, many hiking trails, and Taj was in rock heaven!

Fullerton Arboretum: various trees, plants, flowers, waterfalls, creeks, ducks, and cool maze-like paths! Will Rogers Historic State Park in Pacific Palisades (just off of Sunset Blvd, in LA): hiking, kite flying, horses, deer, and sunset with Auntie Brina :)

During our 2 LA day trips we visited with Kristen and her kiddos Ella & Will, had special time with Auntie Brina, and I had a wonderful reunion lunch with my dear high school best friend Iva who I haven't seen in 13 years!

We also visited the farm this month, one of Taji's favorite places. There were many new babies to see: newborn piglets, baby calf, and baby chicks! Taj loves pointing out all the animals and doing the animal sounds!

On Fridays, our babysitter and Taj's play buddy Samantha comes over to play and take Taji to the park, while I go to Pilates, run errands, and Brad & I go on our date nights! Since Taj turned One, we have fully taken advantage of our treasured date nights! We love to explore new restaurants, love our time to connect, and often times it feels like the old pre-marriage/pre-baby days :)

What I love about Sam is that she is super responsible and knows exactly what Taj likes and doesn't like. She feeds him, bathes him, and puts him to bed without a whine from him, and he sleeps like an angel. I'm glad he feels this comfortable with her! I also really like that she sends me text updates and snaps these adorable pics of him while playing:

And now, here is this month's Taj updates! We like to describe Taj as our Tajmanian devil and loverboy all-in-one. As our loverboy, he LOVES to give hugs and kisses, and cuddles with his favorite stuffed animal buddies:
As the Tajmanian devil, he makes big messes around the house and climbs furniture (we are trying work on his love for throwing things)!
He learned how to kick a ball, is a total Bookworm (we often find him sitting quietly reading through his books!), can complete his color and shapes puzzles pretty independently, and his new favorite words he loves to say are: hoop, rock, juice, "gogurt" (yogurt), butt paste, elephant, zebra, bear, fire truck, "mamoe"(lawnmower), potty, "nite nite", fishie, phone, "aminals" (animals), dinosaur, circle, square, and baby. Its like every month he picks up 10-20 new words! He loves the Old MacDonald/ Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes/ One, Two, Buckle My Shoe songs, and fills in the end words! Taj now knows where his mouth, arm, "boobies" (he loves to point out mine!), hair, and legs are. He does the animal sounds for elephant, horse, mouse, pig, and frog! As far as the Your Baby Can Read program goes, Taj's motivation goes up and down with the cards, although he can identify and read "hi", "eyes", "nose", "elephant", and "dog". It's hard to tell because he gets distracted and gets goofy. This month, Taj was a much better eater than a napper (he is irregular and prefers only 1 nap a day.) He loves smoothies, juices, and eats practically everything we are eat so its very easy these days (fingers crossed), and he really loves my healthy homecookin'!

Taj's First Haircut

Who is this little rockstar in dire need of a haircut?
The one and only Taj Leon, whose strawberry blond locks have grown a little too long (a few strands were so long they touched the tip of his nose!)

side view:

So, today was the day we took him in for his FIRST haircut! He got to sit in his own airplane and steer!

What a fun time he had, and what a good boy he was for the stylist! Check out Mr. Handsome!

high fiving his stylist:

And here he is, post haircut! Now with his new hair, he looks even more like a big boy! A perfect ending to a week of successful surprise "firsts"!

First time peeing in the potty!

What an incredible week for our Big Boy! What else is he going to surprise us with before the end of the week?!!! A crowning achievement for Taji, going pee pee in the potty for the first time! Maybe it was him downing a cup of diluted apple juice 5 minutes prior, or the extended storytime we have sitting on the potty, but he went all by himself, and even noticed and exclaimed "pee pee!" The funny thing is we haven't even "officially" begun potty training! I haven't even started reading the renowned how-to book I downloaded online. This last month we just basically introduced him to the potty and have him sit on it a couple times a day either right after he goes poop or right before bathtime. He loves sitting on it and being read to (we have our designated potty books which have probably peaked his interest). Now I really need to buckle down and start my reading so we don't lose this momentum and his motivation! Hooray for our sweet Taji!

I Wuv You!

Taj saying "I Love You" at bedtime earlier tonite! (at 16 months old!) The last couple of months he has said " I wa wa" after we tell him we love him, but tonite he said an endearing "I Wuv You!" I couldn't believe my ears! We had him repeat it over and over a few more times before I remembered to get Brad to videotape it. Brings tears to my eyes every time!

Less than 100 days.....

until we meet our second baby boy!

Dear Baby Jax,
We have entered into the double digits of our countdown to the day we get to hug you, kiss you, and love you to pieces! I hope your time in my belly is flying by as fast as it is flying by for me! I hope you are comfortable, enjoying the rocking and swaying from the daily walks and hikes we take, and loving the sweets I am fattening you up with! I want to thank you for being so kind to me, allowing me to savor this pregnancy without heartburn or any pains. I thought I began to feel some sciatica last week but thank goodness it was just a sore muscle from all the walking we have been doing lately with your big brother! I love how you always wait until your brother takes a nap or goes to bed to show yourself to me with all your loving kicks and prods. I love watching you dance around inside my belly, are you going to be as energetic as your big brother? I can't wait to see your face and cover it with a million kisses, I have this feeling you may look more like me than your daddy! Will you have similar features as your brother Taj (who still looks so much like daddy from eyes down) or will you be a blondie like your mommy? I am starting to design your beautiful crib and bedding that will go in the nursery, you will love sharing a room with your brother Taj, it will be a bachelor pad for sure! I am also excited to plan a very nice "sprinkle" (as they say for a baby boy shower) dinner celebration as we get closer to your date of arrival! I love all this suspense and surprises you have in store for us! Just please make sure you arrive on YOUR day, and not Christmas Eve or Christmas Day! ha ha :) Be a good little boy, get lots of rest and gulp up all those nutrients so you are healthy when you arrive, and until our sweet embrace please let me know if there's anything I can do for you in the meantime! I love you baby! ~your mama

To Little Brother from Big Brother

Dear Little Brother,
Even though you are still cooking in mama's belly I just wanted to let you know how excited I am to meet you and I can't wait for you to be born already! I'm sure you already recognize my voice (sorry for all the yelling, I kinda have a loud voice!) and sorry for all the accidental bumping into you when crawling all over mama! Today, I helped mama go through the newborn clothes I used to wear and we picked out only the best outfits for you, sorry about the hand-me-downs too, but I think you will be quite comfy in all the cute sleepers I used to wear! Between you and I, I'm warning you now that I think mama may get carried away trying to coordinate our outfits and even dress us alike! Just remember, it wasn't my idea! Anyway, I promise I will be a good big brother to you, I promise to try my hardest not to squish you in the beginning (I just really love giving hugs right now!) and I will also try not to steal your pacifiers. Wait until you see all the toys you get to play with, they have all been approved by me and I will be sure to show you how they work! Well, little bro, you take good care of yourself and keep growing healthy and strong in mama's belly, so you have lots of energy to play with me!
Kisses and hugs, your Big Brother

Girls Gone Wild

This past weekend, Laura and I hosted an ultra swanky bachelorette party for our good friend Jane! It was the bride-to-be's last fling before the official ring, at the St. Regis Resort in Dana Point! I had so much fun designing the theme (hot pink and black, feathers & pearl theme!), taking some of the fun fond things from my own bachelorette party and incorporating it into Jane's. We had lots of surprises in store for her, including the location! I baked these hot pink mini cupcakes with sugar pearls on top:

Laura had the party catered with yummy Greek food:

Here we are playing the infamous and scandalous "I Never" drinking game (mine and Barbara's shot glasses had water in it for your info.... we were the only 2 preggos!)

Then..... there was a knock at the door! Who could it be? Hotel Concierge? "Did somebody order room service or just a stripper-a-gram?!!!" This is the only pic I can share of Jane's stripper surprise, the rest are just too R-rated for this blog!
Laura and I got her good!!! But we weren't done yet!!! (here we are with the bachelorette in the middle)
We had an elegant surprise dinner waiting for her at Motif restaurant at the resort......
After a crazy day and classy dinner evening with the girls, we resided to our room and slept in without being woken up by the babies! Ah, first time for me being away from my boys and having an overnight girls nite! Looking forward to a girls Vegas Trip after Baby Jax arrives! In the morning before we checked out, we had one last surprise for our wonderful friend, a massage at the spa!
Thanks to my partner-in-crime Laura for helping me put this shin-dig together, what a blast! Now we are looking forward to the fabulous Palm Springs 3-night wedding extravaganza the bride and groom have in store!
