our story

It all began on the evening of Nov 29th 2003, at former Chat Noir French Restaurant in Costa Mesa, CA. Brad approached me [Jana] and we instantly connected; it was love at first sight. The next 4 years that followed were a whirlwind of romance, growing pains, and adventures. We circled the globe, traveling to South America, Europe, and Asia. Then one night, Brad surprised me with a romantic beachside proposal. We made it official on August 23rd 2008 with an intimate wedding at a hip art gallery in Laguna Beach. A year later we finished redesigning our home in the beach village of Corona del Mar.

On May 18th, 2010, we were blessed with a sweet little miracle of our own, our baby boy Taj Leon. He stole our hearts and took our breath away! Then, 19 months later, his incredible little brother, Jax Franz, arrived on Christmas morning (December 25th) 2011. What an amazing gift we received! In an effort to slow down the clock and enjoy our beautiful family, in Spring of 2012, we sold our CA seaside home and moved across the country to our dream lake house in Brad's hometown of Bemus Point, a resort village on Chautauqua Lake in Western New York! Even though we are living a more slow paced life, we are living a life far from ordinary!

From the West Coast to the East Coast, our Grover family adventures continue! So won't you come along and join us on this journey of love, family, and travel we like to call our La Vida Grover!

A Bee sting, a Booboo, and a Bump

Oh, my little boys...... it seems like no matter what precautions we take, they always seem to find trouble!  Boys, bumps, and bruises all seem to go together these days.  Not that my little guys are clumsy, its just that they are WILD and nuts!  They are little balls of energy!  They run, jump, chase each other, and wrestle ALL.THE.TIME!  As a mother of boys, I frequently have mini panic attacks.  I also can't resist hearing all the laughter and giggles that go with their mischief, until of course, they turn into howls and cries!

In early September, Taj got his first bee sting!  It happened at the park, when he was running around in the grass and trying to swat at a bee that wouldn't leave him alone.  He got stung on his index finger! As a parent, you know the difference between a fake dramatic cry and real pain cry.  The cry he let out when he got his first bee sting broke my heart.  There was nothing I could do at the moment to take that pain away.  I think that is one of the worst feelings you can have, that you can't comfort your child fast enough.  Luckily, we had friends with us at the park that had experience with bee stings and could advise me on what to do.  After a quick inspection of the sting, a little ice, and a baking soda paste to ease the pain and swelling, as well as a whole lot of kisses, an hour later Taj was back to playing!  What a relief that he is not allergic to bees!  You don't know whether they are or are not, until it happens, and then you just wait and watch for symptoms.

Then, in October, Taj got yet another booboo.  But this booboo was no booboo you could heal with a kiss.  My parents were witness to this incident as we were skyping with them in the kitchen when it happened.  Is it just me, or do other mothers experience their children misbehaving and seeking out attention when we are on the phone or on the computer?? We all know my boys can't sit still (unless they have a book or TV in front of them), and truth be told, when I was on the computer for a weekly skype session with my parents, I was very distracted when the boys began running around the kitchen like wild beasts.  All of a sudden, I hear a drawer open, and it was not the usual "snack" or cereal drawer. It was the drawer that had food processor parts and other oddly unknown objects.  Well, leave it to the ring leader of all mischief, to pick up a slicer (you heard right), and slice part of his thumb off!!!  It all happened within a second, and there was lots of blood, and the loudest most painful cry.  I didn't even realize how severe the cut was until I saw Taj's flesh on the other side of the slicer!  EEEK!  I panicked.  I wrapped Taj's finger with paper towels and had him hold his arm above his head to slow down the bleeding.  I called Brad.  I called the urgent care, and we were off to seek emergency medical care.  They comforted him, and us, and he was all better.  No stitches.... just a lot of gauze, and a traumatic experience for all of us.  He was lucky he didn't slice the tip of his thumb off.  Jax and us were SO lucky that Jax didn't touch the slicer.  I can't imagine what a bloody nightmare that would have been.

Can you handle it?  Here is Taj's biggest booboo to date:
Brad was very squeamish around Taj's raw fleshy, bloody thumb, so this mama had to do all the wrapping and bandaging for the next week or so.  After 2 weeks, the cut healed nicely, its amazing how quickly the skin regenerates and heals itself!  Taj will always have a scar though, and it may mess up his finger print, but hopefully, this will be a lesson for him and us!

Next up..... mischief culprit #2!  And you thought Taj was the only booboo victim in the household!!
Jax was messing around and hopping from stool to stool at our kitchen island like he usually does, when lo and behold, he fell.  On his head.  And got the biggest bump ever!  My poor baby Jax!  I swear, his head is made of steel, because this little boy has bumped his head SOOOO many times  since he learned how to crawl.  It doesn't help to have an older brother around that knocks him down and wrestles with him.

After an ice pack and lots of TLC, Jax's bump totally disappeared!  Isn't it incredible how resilient these boys are?  This was not the biggest booboo to date for Jax, his biggest was when he tripped and fell in Turks and Caicos and his sunglasses pierced his forehead.  Fortunately, that little scar is finally starting to fade!
