our story

It all began on the evening of Nov 29th 2003, at former Chat Noir French Restaurant in Costa Mesa, CA. Brad approached me [Jana] and we instantly connected; it was love at first sight. The next 4 years that followed were a whirlwind of romance, growing pains, and adventures. We circled the globe, traveling to South America, Europe, and Asia. Then one night, Brad surprised me with a romantic beachside proposal. We made it official on August 23rd 2008 with an intimate wedding at a hip art gallery in Laguna Beach. A year later we finished redesigning our home in the beach village of Corona del Mar.

On May 18th, 2010, we were blessed with a sweet little miracle of our own, our baby boy Taj Leon. He stole our hearts and took our breath away! Then, 19 months later, his incredible little brother, Jax Franz, arrived on Christmas morning (December 25th) 2011. What an amazing gift we received! In an effort to slow down the clock and enjoy our beautiful family, in Spring of 2012, we sold our CA seaside home and moved across the country to our dream lake house in Brad's hometown of Bemus Point, a resort village on Chautauqua Lake in Western New York! Even though we are living a more slow paced life, we are living a life far from ordinary!

From the West Coast to the East Coast, our Grover family adventures continue! So won't you come along and join us on this journey of love, family, and travel we like to call our La Vida Grover!

Pittsburgh, PA Museum Weekend (2nd Mom & Sons Wknd Away)

What happens when our very hard-working and successful Daddy Brad goes on a work trip overseas to  Europe? This mama and her boys plan an adventure!  No use sticking around this part of town when our other half is away..... we like to play when daddy is away!!!  Brad went on a weeklong business trip to Oslo, Norway, and combined it with a Stockholm, Sweden weekend visit to see our friends Griffin and Jane, who just recently moved there!  While daddy was working away (and "making coin" as Taj calls it, thanks to Brad!) we stuck with our weekday routine of preschool, music class, library, and play dates.  Then the weekend rolled around, the temperatures dropped, a storm rolled in bringing snow to some parts of the area...... and we were ready to jet off!  We were actually in the mood to visit a city.  Taj loves cities.  He knows very well the difference between a city and the town we live in.  We are one part 'small town dwellers' and one part 'city excitement seekers'.  We love cities for their culture, arts, dining choices, and all the incredible museums.  The boys also love hotels.  So I looked on the map, decided we had not been to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania yet (a 2 hour 40 minute drive south), booked a hotel, drew up an itinerary filled with museum outings, presented it to Taj, and got the final approval!  We hit the road Saturday morning.  It was Pittsburgh, or bust!  It was the 2nd Mom & Sons Weekend away! Just 7 months ago we took our first Mom & Sons weekend trip to Cleveland, and I thought this was going to be an annual tradition, HA!  More like BI-annual, or maybe not? hmmmm
Pittsburgh is pretty.  We had pretty weather all weekend.  The city is clean, has a lot of historic buildings along with modern high rises.  Its a city of many bridges (its surrounded by a river).  I never imagined Pittsburgh to be so nice, and it really is a sweet city!  We stayed at the Westin, near the convention center.

On our first day, Saturday, we visited the Children's Museum.  Its voted to be on the top 10 of children's museums in the nation, according to Parent Magazine.  I researched the museum prior to our trip and found out they were having a "monsters" day on Saturday! Perfect!  Taj is obsessed with monsters! When we arrived, the boys had their faces painted for the very first time!

water play

After the museum closed at 5pm, we checked in to our hotel, got settled in, ordered room service for dinner... complete with dessert!  The boys got their baths, and I scrubbed their faces clean.  We were so exhausted from driving and playing that we were ready to crash early.  Jax decided he was going to be the rebel of the group.  He wanted to party all night.  Yup.  Jax would not settle down to sleep until almost midnight.  He sang, he shrieked, he giggled.  Poor Taji.  Poor mommy!  Who knew staying at a hotel would turn Jax into such a party animal.  He has a wild streak in him.

Once he finally fell asleep, we all got a good night's sleep.  Morning came, and the boys regained their energy.  They probably woke up half the hotel guests too.  They love to have scream competitions.  And I would love to put a muzzle on them.

Proof that we survived breakfast, and that the boys ate their food!  Jax was such a BIG eater all weekend long!  Must have had a big appetite from all the dancing and singing!

After a little stroll through the city, and a quick "Superhero" photo shoot I got inspired to do, we checked out of the hotel and drove over to where the University of Pittsburgh is (PITT).  I have noticed that all University towns are so damn cute.  No matter what the state or city, when you go near a big university notice how nicely maintained and cute the surrounding town is.  At this part of the city, near the University, were the science and art museums.  Gorgeous.  Will have to bring the boys and Brad back here again.  Since the day before was all about monsters and creative hands-on playing, on this second day, I decided we would go get our dinosaur fix at the Museum of Natural History.  Both boys love dinosaurs lately, Jax especially.  I thought they would be amazed.  I certainly was.  Well, turns out Jax decided to nap for half of it, and Taji couldn't understand where the "real" dinosaurs were.  He thought he was going to see them as pictured in storybooks and movies :)

digging for bones

Thankfully though, when Jax awoke from his nap, he couldn't believe his eyes!!  Imagine falling asleep in the car, then waking up in the museum and staring directly at these magnificent bony creatures!  First thing that came out of Jax's mouth was "ROAR!".  He likes the Katy Perry "Roar" too!!! LOL
Jax loved seeing the dinosaurs!  And Taj loved being the tour guide and telling him all about them!

Another successful Moms & Sons weekend!  Or was it????

I decided to break down the facts and weigh out the positives and negatives...... so next time I think its a smart idea to take the boys away for the weekend WITHOUT brad, WITHOUT help, and during their SIBLING RIVALRY and TANTRUM stage, I will be better equipped to make a decision!

THE CONS
-boys fiddling around with seatbelts in the car, undoing them..... screaming for their toys and lovies
-difficulty sharing stuff ("thats mine!" "No, MINE!")
-Jax, the party animal, during bedtime, stayed up and kept everyone awake 2 hours past bedtime
-screaming competitions in hotel early, in the evening and early morning
-at breakfast, they opened 6 jam packets, started licking them
-Taj chucking my rings across the room, in hotel room
-Taj, the sourpuss, at the dinosaur museum
-more tantrums than mommy could handle..... feeling outnumbered

THE PROS
-the boys loved getting their face painted, first time (It was SO cute to watch!)
-boys making each other laugh.  They are the peanut gallery.
-they were good eaters, big appetites
-played nice at museums, followed and chased each other around
-Taj was a very good luggage (bell hop)!
-once they fell asleep, slept all night without a peep
-their cute outfits and cute grins got us in for FREE! at the dinosaur museum
-sweet huggy moments with all 3 of us
-Jax was amazed by the dinosaurs.... Taj not so much ("where are the real dinosaurs??)
