We've been living in Bemus Point, NY for over a month! And the verdict is.....Bemus Point already feels like home! And we are not even moved into our big new house yet!!! This last week we picked out the carpet and paint colors, Brad has his new office, and the boys began their swim classes. And I, I have turned into a Zumba junkie! I'm pleasantly surprised how nice everything has clicked for us, the town has embraced us, and we're moving along perfectly with our plans. My sister once mentioned to me that home isn't necessarily the location per se but the community that you relate to and feel close with. This was a big question mark when we began our move because I knew we were moving into a small, conservative town, where supposedly most residents are Protestant or Methodist in religion. Brad and I are not religious and do not identify ourselves with a religion, and most of our CA friends come from all walks of life. This was definitely going to be a test whether we could blend right in! Despite Brad having long-time friends in the community, you just never know. Over the last few summers we have grown very close with a few couples, Brad's childhood friends and their wives. They have families themselves, highly educated, and successful in their career endeavors, and both sets of couples are Atheist! Not that that matters, however, pretty funny that the religious minority in town gravitate towards us! We enjoy their company, and share the same taste for fun, food, art, travel, and have high standards. I think that's why we feel already right at home, we love the tight-knit community, the support, and kindness.
We have become the social butterflies in Bemus! I've already been coined the Activities Director, and I get asked what events are going on over the weekend! Isn't it so true that as a resident you often get stuck in the same routine, do the same things, and go to the same places over and over? All it takes is an outsider with a "tourist mentality" who reads the tourist magazines, who has a zest to explore, to make you realize what your community has to offer, and how eventful the summers are here! Truth be told, we really got stuck in a rut living in CDM. Change is good. Change allows you to grow! And its exciting to start a new venture! We are way more social living in Bemus compared to CDM. Maybe because most of our friends here are active outdoors, love going out to eat, have kids themselves, so we have been doing a lot of family activities with them as well as double and group dates! You heard right, date nights weekly! It helps that they hooked us up with multiple babysitters, and are always looking out for our best interest. A secretary who does bookkeeping/ accounting and works part-time for Brad's friend was referred to Brad, and he liked her so much that she will now be working for him the other part of the time! So far, I have only seen the positives living in a small town. Great resources and familiar people that truly have each others backs. We have had painters, stone masonry contractors, babysitters, secretaries, even hairdressers referred to us! Anything we need, we ask our friends, and get good referrals.
I think part of the reason our adjustment has been so easy is because we were mentally open and ready for a change and welcomed whatever came our way. I'm shocked that I don't mind the heat that "feels like you are walking into a steam room" or the loud tropical thunderstorms. In fact, I'm enjoying it!!! I LOVE the constant change in weather.... unlike the dreary foggy june gloom of the California coast and consistent temperatures. All in all, its not that Bemus is better..... its just completely different. We needed this, and it feels totally natural. I miss the people from CA, not the environment or the community. So, in a nutshell, happy 1 month anniversary to us, and many, many more happy ones to come!!
