our story

It all began on the evening of Nov 29th 2003, at former Chat Noir French Restaurant in Costa Mesa, CA. Brad approached me [Jana] and we instantly connected; it was love at first sight. The next 4 years that followed were a whirlwind of romance, growing pains, and adventures. We circled the globe, traveling to South America, Europe, and Asia. Then one night, Brad surprised me with a romantic beachside proposal. We made it official on August 23rd 2008 with an intimate wedding at a hip art gallery in Laguna Beach. A year later we finished redesigning our home in the beach village of Corona del Mar.

On May 18th, 2010, we were blessed with a sweet little miracle of our own, our baby boy Taj Leon. He stole our hearts and took our breath away! Then, 19 months later, his incredible little brother, Jax Franz, arrived on Christmas morning (December 25th) 2011. What an amazing gift we received! In an effort to slow down the clock and enjoy our beautiful family, in Spring of 2012, we sold our CA seaside home and moved across the country to our dream lake house in Brad's hometown of Bemus Point, a resort village on Chautauqua Lake in Western New York! Even though we are living a more slow paced life, we are living a life far from ordinary!

From the West Coast to the East Coast, our Grover family adventures continue! So won't you come along and join us on this journey of love, family, and travel we like to call our La Vida Grover!

Our 3rd & 4th Month Bemus Anniversary

Q. What is a sure-tell sign that our Bemus "reality" has hit?
                   a) sickness
                   b) speeding ticket
                   c) ghost scare
                   d) emotional breakdown
                   e) all of the above

A.  e) All of the Above!!!!!!
Ummmm, yeah..... we've had a busy couple of months!  Let me explain.....
a) as you know, we had that nasty Hand, Mouth, Foot Virus that put us out for 2 weeks, b) mama got herself a speeding ticket (going 79 in 65 MPH) on the 86 highway.  Its so easy to go fast because there is NO traffic EVER.... but I have since learned to use cruise control!  On a side note, driving at night is my least favorite, I am SO afraid of hitting a deer.  I grip the steering wheel, keep my brights on when I can, and pray that I don't hit a single creature.  The roadkill on the side of road is something I will never get used to! c) we live in a BIG house now, and secondly, we really only have 1 neighbor waaaaay in the back (rest of the homes around us are summer vacation homes).  Homes have their unfamiliar noises.  That being said, one night when Brad was out, I heard noises that I was not familiar with, so my crazy imagination suspected a ghost (I even texted Brad telling him I was freaked out, but he just laughed at me and reminded me the house was only 6 years old.)  Sure thing, what I heard was the heater, and it echoed in the stairway.  Then lastly, d) just 2 weeks ago, I had my first emotional moment, couldn't get a hold of my CA friends I typically chat with, and felt so far away from that "friend" security blanket.  Damn time zones! I have met great friends here, but friendships take time and we are still getting to know each other so I was desperate to talk to my friends that know me really well.  When I finally did talk to my close friend Laura in CA, its amazing how quickly she snapped back my confidence and made me feel stronger.  I  learned that I need to have that kind of a friend in Bemus as well, someone I can vent to and will not judge me or gossip (it is a small town, after all)..... so I went out on a limb and reached out to Amanda, who could relate to me since she moved here a couple years ago.

LIFE UPDATE:

So, for all those who asked..... three is the magic number.  It took 3 months for reality to set in that we really did move to a different state, and started a different kind of life.   The nature, the space, the privacy, the slow-pace, and the individuality/ creativity of our current environment and lifestyle brings us much more peace, freedom, and fun.  Because we moved, because we have slowed down, because we have all this space and privacy in our new house, we enjoy each other as a family that much more!  Family life is at its best.... the boys are so spoiled having Brad and I around all the time!  We try new things and go on adventures almost every day!  Brad usually goes to his office to work around noon (when the boys go down for their naps), and some days he doesn't work at all!  We are having such a blast together, and loving all of our cuddle time!

Some things we (mostly I) have learned living a small town are that its really a small world.  By that I mean, when I went to court to argue my speeding ticket, guess who was the judge?  Our neighbor behind our cottage, that is also our friend's uncle!  He recognized me..... hope that means he will excuse my ticket! LOL  Living in a small town you have to be prepared for unannounced visits at all times...... friends dropping by without a warning, a text, or a call.  I better start brushing my hair now, and keeping the kitchen more "tidy".  Also, if you plan to live in a small town, be prepared to feed it.  You have to keep your fridge, pantry, (that includes beer and wine) fully stocked since people like to come by for no reason, and they have kids, who constantly need to snack!  Every week, I go grocery shopping at Wegman's, (I go by myself now.... much easier without the babies) and every week I spend a hefty $200-300 on food.   We bought a separate freezer, and an extra fridge for the garage, so we have plenty of room for our food/ beverage supply.  One of the many awesome things about living in this region of the US, is that most people eat grass-fed beef, pastured chickens, delicious dark orange yolk eggs, and organic veggies.  Why?  Because they either have their own vegetable gardens, or they know someone who has a cow and chickens and they buy the meat from them.  We are planning to purchase part of a cow, as well as a few whole chickens (meat slaughtered, clean, chopped, and divided, so its ready to freeze and cook) to fill our freezer up.  Can't believe this is what we have been missing out on, to think we were buying foreign meat from a store... ugh!  There's a big difference in freshness and taste, and of course we wouldn't settle for anything less when it comes to feeding the growing bodies of our little boys.  Here's a few pics of some of my cooking:
I roasted my first chicken...... very easy recipe (I just have to get used to rubbing and massaging butter on the outside and inside of chicken skin.... its very slimy!)

The Slow Cooker has become my best friend..... now I get why its a "must" to have one of these things in the kitchen!  It does all the cooking for you! I have also been introduced to a new system in prepping healthy meals for half a month by cutting all meat, veggies, and making sauce to fill baggies up for the freezer so when we want a dinner all I have to do is defrost and dump it into the slow cooker or cook it quickly on the skillet.  The meals have been yummy and I will post recipes soon!  I'm addicted and feel like I have much more time away from the kitchen and less dishes to wash!!!  Who says you stop learning..... I learn something new every day and it dramatically changes my life and outlook!!!  I have so many secrets to divulge, I can't wait to share everything that I have learned philosophically and physically!

HOUSE UPDATE:
We had landscapers come out a month ago and they did a beautiful job manicuring our flower/ plant gardens, take a look:

We met with the "stone" guy, who came up with a really cool and unique design for our fireplace/ mantle wall of the living room, as well as our entry and outside flagstone walkways.  This project will begin within the next month or two.

We had a new water treatment/ conditioning system installed!

KIDS UPDATE:
Fall is quickly becoming our favorite season.  Its so colorful with all the pretty red, orange, and yellow trees, and relaxing. The summer activities and boating had ceased, out of town guests have gone home, we are going out less, and staying-in more.  We are beginning the hibernation for Winter HA HA!  Its nice to just be lazy, and to rest, especially when most of our days are jam packed with mommy & me classes.  Starting the month of September, every day we have something going on for the kiddos.  Gymnastics, Swim, Baby Sign Language (my friend teaches it so I take the boys to it!), Musikgarten music class, story time..... Oh, and beginning in October, every Friday, Taj will attend this pre-school like structured play group for 2 1/2 hours! We have plenty of play buddies, and meeting new friends at every class!  Now that we have settled in our new home sweet home, potty training and Czech & Spanish language lessons have resumed.  With potty training, we picked up where we left off before Jax was born, and having great success!  Taj now tells us when he has to go poo-poo, and is able to pull down his own pants/ diapers and sit on his potty (although he prefers to sit on the big potty).  The boys and I also have our special Czech story/music time each day where we count, label colors, identify animals, body parts, and rhyme in Czech!  Taj knows and says so much in Czech, and his pronunciation is really good.  We are also teaching him Spanish, starting with numbers, colors, and commands.  Taj absorbs and remembers everything, so our goal is to teach him and expose him to everything we possibly can that will help him be cultured, speak other languages, and so forth.  Our little guy, Jax is growing like a weed, talking and attempting to walk.  He is so eager to keep up with his big bro and to play with the big kids :)
