our story

It all began on the evening of Nov 29th 2003, at former Chat Noir French Restaurant in Costa Mesa, CA. Brad approached me [Jana] and we instantly connected; it was love at first sight. The next 4 years that followed were a whirlwind of romance, growing pains, and adventures. We circled the globe, traveling to South America, Europe, and Asia. Then one night, Brad surprised me with a romantic beachside proposal. We made it official on August 23rd 2008 with an intimate wedding at a hip art gallery in Laguna Beach. A year later we finished redesigning our home in the beach village of Corona del Mar.

On May 18th, 2010, we were blessed with a sweet little miracle of our own, our baby boy Taj Leon. He stole our hearts and took our breath away! Then, 19 months later, his incredible little brother, Jax Franz, arrived on Christmas morning (December 25th) 2011. What an amazing gift we received! In an effort to slow down the clock and enjoy our beautiful family, in Spring of 2012, we sold our CA seaside home and moved across the country to our dream lake house in Brad's hometown of Bemus Point, a resort village on Chautauqua Lake in Western New York! Even though we are living a more slow paced life, we are living a life far from ordinary!

From the West Coast to the East Coast, our Grover family adventures continue! So won't you come along and join us on this journey of love, family, and travel we like to call our La Vida Grover!

Our 2 month Bemus Anniversary

Two months in Bemus Point, NEW YORK!  Last month if felt like a vacation in our cottage, and this month.... well, we were itching to get out of the cottage!  Honeymoon is over folks.  When you don't have a dishwasher, buying pre-made meals (which were pretty good since they were from Wegman's), getting take-out almost every day, and having to go to the laundermat to do laundry is not so much of a fun vacation!  It felt like we were living out of a hotel room!  Its fun for a few weeks, and then.... it's not so fun!  Jax had a rough month due to his teething (he has two big lower teeth now).  We had the "biting during breastfeeding" episodes, and one day he even went on strike and I got sooooo engorged that I turned into a madwoman driving around town trying to find the Medela parts to my breast pump (mine were all in a box somewhere waaaaay in the back of the storage unit.)  I wasn't successful at finding the Medela parts, so I had to buy a cheap Evenflow single pump, but I was successful at convincing Jax to finally nurse before he went to bed.

We spent every weekend in July out on the lake, on our boat.  We are boat people now, yes..... those people.  The kind that love the breeze in our hair when we cruise around, the kind that love to just chill on our boat with good friends and good music.  Just ask Jax..... we think he agrees!

July was also our big birthday month!  From beginning to end we celebrated Brad's 40th with all our glory, and even managed to squeeze in my birthday too!  A week after my birthday, when we finally moved in to our new house (darn contractors.... don't even get me started!) Brad surprised me with a little birthday cake and sweet card.  Its not the front of the birthday card that was special, it was what was written inside :)

We continued our YMCA time with the boys, Taj loves "playing cars and trucks" there and always asks whether we are going to YMCA.  The boys continued their weekly swim classes;  Jax became an excellent splasher and is a total water baby, while Taj has been perfecting his floating, jumping into the water, kicking, and blowing bubbles.  Did you know that he floats without holding on to me? Yes, but he does wear whats called a floatation backpack that straps over his belly and has a "noodle" wrapped around his chest and armpits.  With these on, he jumps into the pool and practices his kicking and "swimming".  He is so excited about swimming that he practices in the bathtub, especially dipping his face in the water and blowing bubbles for Jax!  I plan to keep up the weekly swim class for both boys during the Fall and Winter.  The instructor told me that with the consistency, by his 3rd birthday and just in time for summer Taj should be able to swim on his own :)

We also decided that Wegmans grocery store is DA BOMB!  It has cool double seat attachment grocery carts that the boys have a blast on... they think its a ride!  They not only have the coolest grocery carts, but they have a supervised childcare play place on-site (its for age 3 and up), their restroom is fully stocked with diapers, wipes.... anything you need.  AND they have complimentary drive-up service.  You heard me.  One time when I went alone and bought so much that I needed two carts (this was obviously when we moved into the new house), at check-out I was given a ticket and free of charge they loaded all the groceries on to 2 carts and then all I had to do was pull my car up to this special door and they brought the groceries to my car and unloaded it!  Such a blessing when you have kids!

Oh yes, and before I forget, also in our 2nd month, Jax went to our new pediatrician here (remember when he wasn't eating?  I thought there was something wrong so I got a same day appointment, but all it was was teething pain.)  Brad worked away in his new office with his new secretary.  The boys and I had established a weekly schedule with the YMCA (Zumba), swim class, story time, grocery shopping, and play dates.  Speaking of story time, guess who met their first friend?  ME!  When I was at library with the boys we met another fellow mom and her 11 month old son.  We quickly got to know each other, exchanged numbers, and from there we developed a friendship!  She is my first SAHM Bemus friend.  I say 'first', because all of my other friends are Brad's friends wives!   My new friend's name is Brianna, she grew up here but went to college in Arizona where she met her husband and they decided to move back here this past January.   Kinda almost a similar scenario like us except its flipped around and she's from Bemus and he is not.  They live just up the road from us :) Oh, and they are 10 years younger than us (10+ years younger than Brad), but they thought we were 28! HA!

Taj's signature new look, last month :)  Think we should wean him off the pacifier? LOL

So, we survived yet another month of this moving journey and its funny how easily we adjusted.  Reality has set it, and we are living here in Bemus!  Its exciting, its easy, its slow-paced, its..... nice.  I can't find one bad thing....yet!  What I think we did right was coming here year after year, strengthening our friendships and our networks, so when we finally planted our feet and made it official, we had a strong support system and lots of friends to help us.  The support system... that's key.  We love the people, we love the small town, and we have our own little Bemus Crew (2 other couples) we stick close to and spend a lot of time with.  Its amazing how friends can be like family.  I half heartedly believed Brad when he told me growing up his friends were like his family, but I'm seeing it with my own 2 eyes and these friends he's had growing up truly feels like they are his brothers!  They do so much for us, its pretty special :)
